		<description>

Paulina Berczynski is an artist and designer working interdisciplinarily on a range of diverse creative projects. Her work often combines textile media, socially engaged cultural work, and printmaking. She also uses textiles to facilitate community building and exchange in workshops and participatory projects. Traditional crafts and domestic textiles such as quilts, dish cloths, curtains and cultural embroideries are a frequent reference and departure point across her practice.

About
Artist Statement
CV

Paulina Berczynski is a Polish-American artist and designer working on interdisciplinary projects through social practice, as a cultural worker, and in the studio. She often employs fabric to facilitate exchange in participatory projects. Her work is influenced by traditional forms such as quilts and domestic crafts, and movements for social justice and utopian world building.

Paulina maintains a studio practice and writes about radical textiles for Feral Fabric Journal, where she is co-founder and art director. She recently completed a Fulbright Fellowship to study The Polish School of Textiles in Łódż, during which she also worked in the community on The Trzepak&#38;nbsp;social sculpture, and textile workshop series. She was the 2022 recipient of Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure grant for Feral Fabric Journal, and of a 2023 Prelinger Library residency focusing on California’s intentional communities and back-to-the-land movement. In 2024, She was part of Zusa’s international What’s Next Residency, where she led workshops for Around the Tablecloth in Wrocław and Berlin. In 2025, She will return to Northern California, where she will be an artist in residence at KALA in Berkeley.

Paulina has lectured on contemporary textile art at the university level in the United States and in Poland. She has written for Textile: A Journal of Cloth and Culture (based in the UK), and received an individual artist grant from the City of Berkeley to create participatory story quilts with people experiencing homelessness in support of housing rights. Both individually and as half of Feral Fabric, she has led numerous textile-based workshops with California institutions such as High Desert Test Sites, Berkeley Art Museum, NIAD Art Center and Southern Exposure.

In her previous career, Paulina worked as an art director for some of the world’s biggest and most iconic brands such as Lucky Strike and Puma. FluffyCo, her sustainable lifestyle brand from 2004-2022, was sold internationally in hundreds of shops and online retailers, and made custom products for stores such as Target, Urban Outfitters, and Crate&#38;amp;Barrel. She is currently thinking on the role of design and process in her practice, co-developing an artist in residence project space in Nevada City, and thinking (as always) about collectvity.

	About
Artist Statement
CV

I am a Polish-American visual artist who works on interdisciplinary projects through social practice, as a cultural worker, using design, and in the studio.&#38;nbsp;
My perspective and aesthetic is shaped by a childhood spent moving through different cultures, languages, and socio-economic realities. I was born in Łódź, a post-industrial city that was once the center of commercial textile production for the USSR.
My family left Poland as political refugees in 1980, and moved frequently over the next decade, finding community in wild intellectual Polish diasporas (think basement art parties and accordion dance music). My identity, my work, and my interest in collective action is tied to this immigration experience, and to my family’s direct relationship to Poland’s Solidarity movement for workers’ rights. My interest in radicality and social change was further shaped by the history of San Francisco’s Bay Area, where I was based for almost 25 years.
I use textiles as my primary medium in the studio, and in public projects as a tool for communication. I often reference domestic textiles such as quilts and curtains in my work. These forms and materials are familiar and accessible, and can hold important personal histories, invoking feelings of home and community. I am inspired by women’s work and traditional craft processes. Frequently my work manifests as some combination of textiles and printing, be that digital or screen-printing, or combined in textile collages.&#38;nbsp;
In addition to my art practice, I create patterns and illustrations as a surface designer. &#38;nbsp;I also conduct art historical and academic research, and co-publish Feral Fabric Journal, an online scholarly journal that highlights radical textile production in art, activism, and countercultural movements.

	The Radical Domestic: Revolutionizing Craft2025
Casino, Berlin

	 Part free-school lectures on radical textiles, part sewing skill-share, part collective embroidery practice which took place over three sessions in July and August 2025.
The goal was to share ideas and artists relevant to radicality and protest, new ways of being in the world, and transmitting messages through fabric, and also to make a radical textile together and talk through the possibilities of crafts, code, and building new lexicons of support and resistance. Continuing my practice of building connection through craft and embroidery, this program centered feminism, activism, sharing knowledge and imagining new worlds.Some people came to only one or two sessions for the lecture and embroidery skill-share aspects, while a small group committed to working together over the duration of the project.&#38;nbsp;This group planned the the banner-like textile together around the unifying message “Bring Everyone to the Table”, combining applique flowers associated with resistance movements, text, and other elements that resonated with individual participants’ identities. Conversation during the crafting sessions mostly focused on women’s physical and mental health, sexuality, and safety in public spaces. Despite adding a fourth craft session the textile wasn’t completed, and will now likely take on a different form, to be finished at Casino.I plan to expand on the lectures and turn them into a more comprehensive curriculum online. In the meantime, the lectures can be viewed ︎&#38;nbsp;here.

	Feral Fabric Journal

	Feral Fabric Journal is a scholarly periodic journal highlighting radical textile production in art, activism, and countercultural movements. The journal has been published online since 2018 and, in 2023, received a grant to publish a print version compiling selected content from the first six volumes.Feral Fabric is the collaborative work of artists Paulina Berczynski and Amanda Walters. We bring forward ideas, conversations, and workshops that combine our interests in textiles, contemporary art, and personal and cultural transformation. From 2018-2022 Feral Fabric also led textile-based workshops and projects with institutions including Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley Art Center, Southern Exposure’s Youth Advisory Council, and NIAD Art Center. The multi-year Feral Fabric project Story Quilts was a narrative quilting and DIY craft project with unhoused communities and individuals in the Bay Area.

	FluffyCo2004-2022

	FluffyCo was an eco-friendly, indie lifestyle brand which I founded and where I was creative director for over 15 years. It was focused on sustainability and featured an easygoing, nature inspired aesthetic. FluffyCo had wholesale clients in the US, Canada, Australia and Japanese distribution. It was even briefly sold at iconic Paris boutique Colette! Key Accounts included Crate&#38;amp;Barrel, ModCloth, Urban Outfitters, Target, Fuego stores, and Ships (Japan). Notable Press included InStyle, DesignSponge, Elle, ReadyMade, Martha Stewart Living.
